Ceremony Information

The Office of the Registrar coordinates the commencement ceremony for Morehead State University. Formal graduation ceremonies are held every fall in December (1 ceremony) and spring in May (2 ceremonies).

Students who complete degree requirements in the spring or summer are eligible to participate in the commencement ceremony in May of the graduation year. Students who complete degree requirements in the fall or winter are eligible to participate in the commencement ceremony in December of the graduation year. Graduates who elect not to participate in their respective ceremony will not be eligible to walk in a future ceremony unless they earn a new degree.

On the day of commencement, candidates for graduation are to report to the AAC no later than 30 minutes before the ceremony begins. Candidates should arrive dressed in their cap and gown for undergraduates or cap, gown and hood for graduate candidates. At that time, graduates will line up for the academic procession. The ceremony begins on time barring any extenuating circumstances so please arrive and line up on time.

10 a.m. - Morning commencement ceremony begins

1 p.m. - Formation of the academic procession for students from the College of Business and Technology and College of Science

2 p.m. - Afternoon commencement ceremony begins

Preparing for Graduation

GradFair

GradFair is a one-stop shop event that is hosted each semester by the Alumni Association so that students can obtain everything they need for commencement and connect with important resources. After Grad Fair, students can find the materials needed for commencement at the University Bookstore during regular business hours.

At GradFair, students can:

  • Purchase their cap, gown, and tassel
  • Order class rings
  • Purchase graduation announcements
  • Purchase diploma frames and alumni clothing
  • Speak with staff from the Alumni Center

 

Caps and Gowns

A cap, gown, and tassel are the official regalia that must be worn at commencement for undergraduate candidates. A cap, gown, tassel, and hood for the respective discipline are the official regalia that must be worn at commencement for graduate candidates. Regalia can be purchased at the University Bookstore. We strongly recommend you purchase your cap and gown early. 

 

Special Needs

Graduates requiring special assistance to participate in the commencement ceremony should speak with Registrar's Office staff immediately following commencement rehearsal.

Guests requiring special accommodation or handicapped seating on the day of the ceremony should plan to arrive at least one hour early to receive assistance.



Admission

Admission to the commencement ceremony is free and tickets are not needed. All seating is first-come, first-serve. Handicapped seating is available on the floor of the arena and is also first-come, first-serve. 
MSU Public Safety reserves the right to prohibit any item from entering the premises. All individuals and their belongings are subject to search prior to entry and once inside the building.

 

Photographer

The university makes arrangements with a professional photographer to take pictures of all graduates as they receive their diploma cover on stage. Students participating in the graduation ceremony will have an opportunity to purchase individual photographs from the photographer. Proofs will be emailed directly to students. There is no obligation to purchase photos.

 

Parking

Parking is available in the overflow lot across U.S. 60 with university shuttle services available for students and their guests. Handicapped parking will be available in the lot next to the Academic-Athletic Center (AAC).

Friends and family may view the live webcast of the ceremony via the OVC network. Additional information regarding live stream as well as a direct link is available the day of commencement on Morehead State University’s main webpage.
