Morehead State University has had a presence in Breathitt County for over 30 years. MSU established a permanent presence by establishing a regional campus in 1996, and in 2003, it moved into the Breathitt County Life Skills Center, a recently renovated historical landmark, the Jefferson Hotel.
Historically the academic focus was graduate teacher education coursework to offset the long and treacherous commute to Morehead; however, by the late 1990s, MSU began offering undergraduate courses in elementary education, business and university studies, which blossomed into full, completer programs. Beginning in the fall of 2006, programs were added in special education and Master of Arts in Adult and Higher Education.
Moreover, although the regional campus extended its outreach into the entire Kentucky River Development District by offering undergraduate coursework for completion of the university studies degree through the University Center of the Mountains consortium partnership in Hazard, in the fall of 2006 it also added middle grades education (Hazard) and the Master of Public Administration, and beginning in the fall of 2007, the Master of Arts in Adult and Higher Education will also be a new addition in Hazard. Student services are also provided for MBA students (online).
Enrollment at the regional campus has more than doubled over the past two years, from an enrollment average of 112 (1994-2006) to 238 students in spring 2007. During the same period of time, exclusively online students served by the Jackson Regional campus has grown by 70%, reaching a highpoint of 70 students in fall 2006.
There are obvious opportunities for continued growth in the Kentucky River Development District in the academic areas supporting graduate teacher education, early childhood education, health care, tourism, and small-to-medium business development. We look forward to working toward creating these educational opportunities for our students in Breathitt and the surrounding counties served by MSU at Jackson.
