Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Morehead State University is the gem of eastern Kentucky. With an enrollment of around 10,000 students, Morehead State combines the excitement of a large campus and student body with the close-knit community of much smaller institutions. At MSU, professors know your name and know your story, and care about your personal growth and success.
The Jazz Studies program at Morehead State University is designed for students interested in learning how to perform, compose, arrange, and teach jazz music at a professional level. One of the oldest in Kentucky, the Jazz Studies program was developed to prepare graduates for a career in jazz and commercial music.
Jazz Studies students will take a variety of jazz-related courses, including Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Theory, Jazz History and Literature, Jazz Pedagogy, Jazz Arranging, Music Business, and Music Recording and Sound Reinforcement. Students will have the opportunity to perform in both large jazz ensembles and small jazz combos to hone their improvisational and sight-reading skills. In addition to jazz coursework, students will receive a foundation in classical music through courses such as Music Theory, Music History, and Basic Conducting. To showcase their creative work, jazz studies majors will also present a junior and senior recital as a part of their degree. MSU Jazz Studies graduates are well-rounded musically and academically, and have the tools needed to build a successful career in jazz and commercial music.
We hope you consider making Morehead State University your musical home for your undergraduate or graduate degree!
