Canadian Studies at Morehead State University
MSU has approved a new International Studies minor in Canadian Studies. MSU students may begin their study of Canada with Perspectives on Canada, an introductory team taught Canadian Studies Online Program course, then take advanced CSOP courses in Canadian history, government, civil liberties, environmental policy, economic life, and social and cultural issues from comparative and international perspectives, and conclude their studies with a summer internship in the Canadian Parliament.
These Canadian Studies Online Program courses are available to MSU students, because Morehead State in 2001 joined with Eastern Kentucky University, Western Kentucky University, the University of Kentucky, and Georgetown College to create the Kentucky Canadian Studies Consortium which has offered online courses to consortium students since the Fall 2001. Since then Canadian Government’s Canadian Studies Program Enhancement Grants have facilitated consortium-wide Canadian Studies Online Program development and its institutionalization at MSU as the International Studies Minor Canadian Studies Emphasis.
At MSU, these Canadian Studies Online Program courses are at the core of an IST minor which begins with required onsite courses, focuses on the introductory and advanced Canadian Studies Online Program courses taught by faculty at MSU, EKU, WKU, UK, and Georgetown College, and concludes with a summer internship in the Canadian Parliament. In sum, the IST Minor Canadian Studies Emphasis allows MSU students to take 13 hours of Canada-related courses. Students interested in a Canadian Studies minor should contact Dr. William Green, the CSOP campus coordinator.
