Canadian Studies at
Eastern Kentucky University
EKU has approved a new Canadian Studies minor. Now EKU students may begin their study of Canada with Perspectives on Canada, an introductory team taught Canadian Studies Online Program course, then take advanced CSOP courses in Canadian history, government, civil liberties, environmental policy, economic life, and social and cultural issues from comparative and international perspectives, and conclude their studies with a summer internship in the Canadian Parliament.
These Canadian Studies Online Program courses are available to EKU students, because Eastern Kentucky University in 2001 joined with Morehead State University, Western Kentucky University, the University of Kentucky, and Georgetown College to create the Kentucky Canadian Studies Consortium which has offered online courses to consortium students since the Fall 2001. Since then Canadian Government’s Canadian Studies Program Enhancement Grants have facilitated consortium-wide Canadian Studies Online Program development and its institutionalization at EKU as the International Studies Minor.
At EKU the Canadian Studies minor is an 18 hour program which begins with the required Perspectives on Canada course. Students may then choose their remaining 15 hours from Canadian Studies Online Program courses in history, political science, sociology, and geography taught by CSOP faculty at EKU, MSU, WKU, UK, and Georgetown College; and they may conclude their online coursework with an internship in the Canadian Parliament. Students interested in a Canadian Studies minor should contact Dr. Steven Savage, Fall Semester the CSOP campus coordinator or Dr. Sara Ziegler, the Spring Semester CSOP campus coordinator.
