What we do:
The Kentucky Center for Traditional Music was established in June 2000 in support of the cultural, educational and economic development missions of Morehead State University. Its purposes include the preservation of traditional music through collection and display of artifacts, sponsorship of public programs of education and performance and the nurturing of music artists and instrument makers, also known as luthiers.
KCTM utilizes performance venues on the MSU campus and elsewhere for programs such as the "Sounds of our Heritage" series which introduces students of all ages to the various forms of traditional music.
Friends of the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music, Inc. is a non-profit corporationthat has been formed to help KCTM with outside financial support and to encourage personal involvement of the traditional music community. Several notable Bluegrass musicians, including Ronnie Reno, J.D. Crowe and Larry Cordle, are serving as directors. KCTM is academically affiliated with MSU's Department of Music which offers a minor in traditional music. Operating funds for KCTM come from MSU, private gifts and grants and income from sponsored events and activities. KCTM is a proud sponsor of Clack Mountain Festival, the first Bluegrass festival of Kentucky's summer season, held the first weekend of June in downtown Morehead.
What traditional music is and is not:
Our working definition of traditional music embraces Bluegrass, historical folk, old timey, mountain, gospel, blues, and other music forms spanning the full range of acoustic instrumentation and vocal presentation. Our focus is on the musical traditions of East Kentucky, Kentucky and Appalachia. The mandolin is featured in our logo because our brand of traditional music does not include the slick, pop-oriented "Nashville sound" of today's mainstream country music. KCTM is a member of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), the Americana Music Association (AMA) and the Folk Alliance.
Where we are:
KCTM maintains offices at 149 East Main Street in downtown Morehead, Ky. Parking is available on the street in front of the offices or behind the building. KCTM may be reached by calling 606.783.9001 or on the Web at www.kctm.info. An interactive museum of traditional music is being planned for the first floor. Offices and teaching/rehearsal areas are located on the second floor.
What we envision:
We intend to seek external funds for a permanent downtown home for KCTM. Tentative plans for the facility include offices, classrooms, rehearsal rooms, recording studio, a museum of traditional music and a 200-seat music theatre.
Grant funds are being sought for the archiving of traditional music and art in cooperation with KCTM's sister agency, the Kentucky Folk Art Center, MSU's Camden-Caroll Library, and the Appalachian Heritage Program of the Caudill College of Humanities.
