DEFINE YOUR TOPIC Choose and define your topic. Identify search terms to use to browse library databases and the Internet. You may have to narrow or broaden your search depending on the amount of material available on your subject.
LOCATE BACKGROUND INFORMATION Find background information on your topic by gathering material from a variety of sources.
a. Search the Library Catalog for books and videos. Locate encyclopedias, handbooks, and bibliographies that cover your topic to help you get an overview. Learn more about searching the catalog by going here.
b. Search the Library Databases for articles in journals, magazines, and news sources.
c. If you have been unable to find enough information on your topic, search the Internet using Suggested Subject Guides and Search Engines .
CITE MATERIALS CORRECTLY Use a style manual to cite your sources correctly--MLA, APA, or Chicago Manual of Style.
