Master of Arts in Social Sciences

The M.A. in Social Sciences program is a flexible program that provides an exciting intellectual challenge and opens the door to many opportunities. The program incorporates interdisciplinary perspectives and methodologies in relation to topics like mountaintop removal, the prison-industrial complex, global finance and sex trafficking. Likewise, courses on globalization, Asia and cities and materials on migration, international institutions and history of slavery are balanced by a regional focus on Appalachian development, rural culture, education, gay teens, and the like.

Designed to meet the specific needs and interests of career professionals, students looking to pursue a Ph.D. and international students, a master’s degree in social sciences can provide you with further qualification for professional advancement in your field. Certified social studies teacher who complete our program may also qualify for Rank I status.

Our program welcomes international students and is able to accommodate students from many different backgrounds, different English language skill levels and with career aspirations. 

Flexibility

As a student in our program, you can either complete your degree completely online or through a combination of online and traditional classes on campus. Our program also includes thesis and non-thesis options as well as evening classes for students working full-time. You may tailor classes to suit your career aspirations and interests as they develop. International students are offered 6 credit hours of classes on campus to meet their student status requirements.

Dedicated Faculty

Faculty members serve as mentors to students and will immerse you in interdisciplinary methods, theories and practices of social sciences through personal instruction and advising.  

You will study under dedicated and active researchers who are widely published in their fields of specialty including:
