The Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education
provides initial certification programs for undergraduate and graduate students who want
to teach in public middle and high schools.
We offer these undergraduate degree programs:
As you work towards your dream of teaching you will pursue
intensive studies in two separate content disciplines (teacher education
courses and the content discipline you wish to teach).
You may choose to teach in one of the following
If you are a professional who has earned an undergraduate
degree and would like to attain teacher certification and a graduate degree,
visit our Master of Arts in
Teaching page. You will work with our department in addition to other
departments across the College of Education and will be provided with an

Our students are immersed in research on effective classroom
teaching and pursue coursework in the following:
Extensive field experiences will accompany all of your instructional methods classes. Students complete 200 hours of field experience before their final semester of student teaching begins.
During your semester of student teaching you will have the
chance to work under experienced educators who will mentor you and provide you
with feedback to improve your skills. The experience you earn with us will
prepare you professionally to work effectively with students from diverse
backgrounds who have a wide variety of needs.
