Eligibility

High school students who meet admission criteria at the University and have experience in music and all students with a bachelor degree in music (see “Prospective Music Graduate Students”) are eligible to apply for admission into the music programs at Morehead State University.  An audition is essential for career planning and counseling in the appropriate course of study.  For more information regarding admission to Morehead State, contact the Office of Admissions, Morehead State University, Morehead, KY 40351-1689, (telephone) 606.783.2000 or apply online.

Entrance Auditions and Placement Assessment

All new and transfer students planning to major or minor in music must audition before the music faculty on their principal performing instrument or voice prior to enrollment.  The audition process is used to determine the student's readiness for entry into a music degree program.  A scholarship audition may serve as a student's admission audition.

A placement examination is given in piano prior to enrollment.  The results are used for advisement as to course and program enrollment.  Credit by examination for course in the Class Piano sequences must be validated by the faculty and processed through the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance Office and the MSU Testing Center.

Admission Audition Results and Admission Status

All students that audition will be assessed by the faculty committed for the purpose of advising and determining admission status.  For the purpose of admission to the Music Programs at MSU, student will receive one of three results:

  • "Unconditionally Admitted":  Student is fully admitted into program and is free to take classes in the major.  Depending on the quality of the student's performance in their audition, the faculty audition committee may elect to recommend the student for a music scholarship.
  • "Conditionally Admit":  Student is determined to be deficient in performance abilities.  Student works with their private teacher to determine what material are needed to delete the deficiencies and are given up to two semesters to receive unconditional admission.  The student's private applied lessons do not count toward degree. The student is granted permission to take major courses for two semesters.  If the deficiencies are not resolved within two semesters, the student will not be allowed to continue as a music major.
  • "Do Not Admit":  The faculty committee determines that the student is far too deficient to be successful as a music major.  The student is not allowed to register for classes in any of the music degree programs.

Transfer Student Admission

The music major entering the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance by transfer must submit an official transcript of all previous college work.  The applicant should be prepared to validate achievements in the area of applied music, music theory, ear training and sight singing, keyboard proficiency, and the history and literature of music.  Resolution of any deficiency must be initiated during the first registration period.

Music Scholarships / Financial Aid

Music scholarship awards are available to qualified students as determined through a scholarship audition. These awards serve numerous students annually.  All awards are contingent upon admission to the University.

Each year the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance offers numerous scholarships to talented music-major and music-minor students.  Students who enter MSU are eligible for the following and more:

The Music Scholarship Committee considers many criteria before recommending a candidate for a scholarship award including the candidate's performance ability, potential for academic success, anticipated contribution to the program and the needs within the department.  Music scholarship awards are renewable for up to four years provided that the student meets the expectations of the scholarship agreement.

We encourage you to apply for a music scholarship audition online.  If you are unable to schedule an audition on any of the designated dates, you may arrange a special audition time with our faculty.  To receive consideration for a full-tuition scholarship, you are encouraged to apply and audition at your earliest convenience.

Important! We urge you to arrange a personal visit to our campus on a school day.  Your visit will allow us to get to know you better and will provide you with a first-hand look at our department and our world-class faculty. During your visit, you can observe classes, participate in ensemble rehearsals, meet our excellent faculty and students, and perhaps receive a private lesson.  To arrange a visit, contact MSU Enrollment Services.
