Biography
 
Dr. Nathan Nabb serves on the  faculty at Morehead State University, where he has  been the Assistant Professor of Saxophone since 2005. He received his Doctor of Music (2008) and Master of Music (2003) degrees in saxophone performance from Northwestern University, where he studied with Dr. Frederick Hemke and his Bachelor of Music degree (2002) in saxophone performance from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he studied with Professor Debra Richtmeyer.

As a performer, Dr. Nabb’s interests predominantly lie in the performance and promotion of contemporary music for saxophone. His first solo recording Tangled Loops features the works of Babbitt, Berio, Eckardt and Hurel and will be released on the new music label Amp Recordings. Dr. Winston Choi, Chair of the Piano Department at Roosevelt University, is the collaborative pianist featured on the Babbitt and Eckardt. The Northshore Trio (Nathan Nabb and Masahito Sugihara-saxophones and Winston Choi-piano) will be recording new works by Japanese composer Mari Takano for the BIS label in 2010.  

Dr. Nabb regularly performs with the St. Louis Symphony, New World Symphony and IRIS Chamber Orchestra where has worked with renowned conductors Michael Tilson-Thomas, David Robertson, Marin Alsop, Michael Stern and Keith Lockhart. In the summer of 2004, Nathan performed in the second major staging of John Adams’ Nixon in China with St. Louis Symphony and Opera Theater St. Louis. As a chamber musician, Nathan won the Northwestern University Chamber Music competition twice, was a semi-finalist at the Coleman International Chamber Music Competition and was a three-time semifinalist at the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition winning the silver medal in 2001. Dr. Nabb is currently the soprano chair of the Oasis saxophone quartet-along with James Bunte, Dave Camwell and Jim Romain. They plan to release their first recording, featuring the music of  Glass, Pousseur, Gotkovsky and Ligeti, in the summer of 2009. Nathan has given master classes, performed solo recitals and orchestral concerts across North America and Europe.

Dr. Nabb’s students in the Morehead State University saxophone studio have won many competitions both in solo and chamber music settings and have been featured in performances and master classes at North American Saxophone Alliance regional and national conferences, as well as other regional and local clinics.
