  • Saturday, January 30, 2010
  • Saturday, February 20, 2010
  • or by appointment
  • NOTES: Auditions are also scheduled in conjunction with selected educational music events hosted on the MSU campus. Further, since music scholarship awards are contingent upon University admission, prospective students are strongly encouraged to complete their MSU admission application file prior to February 1.

Eligibility

High school students who meet admission criteria at the University and have experience in music and all students with a bachelor degree in music (see “Prospective Graduate Students”) are eligible to apply for admission into the music programs at Morehead State University. An audition is essential for career planning and counseling in the appropriate course of study. For more information regarding admission to Morehead State, contact the Office of Admissions, Morehead State University, Morehead, KY 40351-1689, (telephone) 606.783.2000 or apply online.

Entrance Auditions & Placement Assessment

All new and transfer students planning to major or minor in music must audition before the music faculty on their principal performing instrument or voice prior to enrollment. The audition process is used to determine the student's readiness for entry into a music degree program. A scholarship audition may serve as a student's admission audition.

Placement examinations are given in music theory and piano prior to enrollment. The results are used for advisement as to course and program enrollment. Credit by examination for certain courses in the Music Theory and Class Piano sequences must be validated by the faculty and processed through the Department of Music Office and the Office of the Registrar.

Transfer Student Admission

The music major entering the Department of Music by transfer must submit an official transcript of all previous college work. The applicant should be prepared to validate achievements in the area of applied music, music theory, ear training and sight singing, keyboard proficiency, and the history and literature of music. Resolution of any deficiency must be initiated during the first registration period.

Music Scholarships

Music scholarship awards are available to qualified students as determined through a scholarship audition. These awards serve numerous students annually. All awards are contingent upon admission to the University.

Each year the Department of Music offers numerous scholarships to talented music-major and music-minor students. Students who enter MSU are eligible for the following and more:

  • Up to full-tuition talent-based music scholarships, regardless of student need;
  • Up to full-tuition for academic high achievers, including qualified Kentucky Governor's Scholars and Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts alumni; and
  • Generous non-resident tuition scholarships for academically qualified students.
  • Additional institutional scholarships based on merit and need (see http://www.moreheadstate.edu/scholarships

The Music Scholarship Committee considers many criteria before recommending a candidate for a scholarship award including the candidate's performance ability, potential for academic success, anticipated contribution to the program and the needs within the department. Music scholarship awards are renewable for up to four years provided that the student meets the expectations of the scholarship agreement.

We encourage you to apply for a music scholarship audition online or submit a printed application form. Our audition and preparation information is listed on this site, as well as an online application (see “Preparation”). If you are unable to schedule an audition on any of the designated dates, you may arrange a special audition time with our faculty. To receive consideration for a full-tuition scholarship, you are encouraged to apply and audition at your earliest convenience.

Important! We urge you to arrange a personal visit to our campus on a school day. Your visit will allow us to get to know you better and will provide you with a first-hand look at our department and our world-class faculty. During your visit, you can observe classes, participate in ensemble rehearsals, meet our excellent faculty and students, and perhaps receive a private lesson.
