MSU grad Borders leaves Kentucky Senate for PSC

Sen. Charlie Borders, a two-time Morehead State University graduate and chair of the Kentucky Senate Appropriations and photo-charlie-bordersRevenue Committee, resigned his seat Wednesday to become a member of the Kentucky Public Service Commission, effective immediately.

The Grayson Republican was midway through his fifth term after first being elected in 1990.  His appointment to the PSC by Gov. Steve Beshear was announced at the same time.

“Sen. Borders served his university, his district, and the Commonwealth with distinction throughout his years in the Kentucky Senate,” said Morehead State University President Wayne D. Andrews.  “His unwavering support of this institution will always be remembered and appreciated.  We wish him well in his new, important position.”

Borders was among seven MSU graduates holding leadership positions in the Kentucky General Assembly.  His 18th District includes Bracken, Carter, Greenup, Lewis, Mason and Robertson counties.

In recent years he helped secure the funding of several MSU projects, including the $16.6 million Space Science facility, opened last month, and the $30 million Center for Health, Education and Research, now under construction.

Rep. Robin Webb, D-Grayson, another MSU alumnus, has indicated she will seek Borders’ now vacant seat in the Aug. 25 special election.  Webb is first vice chair of the House Appropriations and Revenue Committee.  Candidates for the remaining 18 months in Borders’ unexpired term will be selected by Republican and Democratic leaders in the six counties.

Other MSU alumni in legislative leadership roles are Sen. Johnny Ray Turner, D-Drift, Senate minority caucus chair; House Majority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins, D-Sandy Hook; House Majority Whip John Will Stacy, D-West Liberty; House Education Committee Chair Carl Rollins, D-Midway, and House Transportation Committee Chair Hubert Collins, D-Wittensville.
