Dr. Wells is Founders Day award recipient

photo-randy-wellsDr. Randall Wells, professor emeritus at Morehead State University, will be honored posthumously by his Alma Mater with the 2009 Founders Day Award for University Service.

The award will be presented as part of Homecoming 2009 on Friday, Oct. 23. The ceremony will be held in conjunction with the Alumni Hall of Fame banquet 7 p.m. in the Crager Room of the Adron Doran University Center.

Dr. Wells’ wife, Sue, a retired faculty member and alumnus, will accept the award.

The Auxier native, who passed away in November 2006, was a two-time graduate of MSU, where he earned a bachelor’s degree with a double major in music, vocal and instrumental, in 1960 and the Master of Arts in education degree in 1963. He continued his education at Union Graduate School, earning the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1975.

Dr. Wells began his career as band director at Morehead High School. At MSU, where he was on the faculty from 1968-93, he rose to the rank of professor of education. He directed two federal programs in the early 1970s that enabled nontraditional students to enroll in protected courses while serving as teacher aides in the public schools and eventually earning teaching certificates. He taught undergraduate and graduate classes and supervised numerous student teachers.

He was a member of the Kentucky Commission on Aging of the Legislative Research Committee. He was active in the Morehead United Methodist Church, Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, the Masonic lodge (for more than 40 years) and Shriners.

Also included in homecoming ceremonies this year will be the memorial brick dedication. Deceased former faculty and staff members will be remembered beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Little Bell Tower. The tolling of the bell will follow the reading of the names and years of service of the honorees.

Additional information or to purchase tickets, which are $20, for the event is available by contacting the Office of Alumni and Constituent Relations at (606) 783-2080 or (800) 783-ALUM.
