'Make A Difference Project' set for Oct. 17-24

Morehead State University’s Center for Regional Engagement, MSUCorps program, along with local AmeriCorps VISTA members, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) have organized a “Make A Difference Project” for Oct. 17-24.

Last year MSUCorps, with the help of the community, was able to donate 878,739 ounces of canned goods and nonperishable food to local food pantries. Many local food banks have been hit hard due to the tough economic times that we are currently facing. Without assistance from the community many people, especially young children and those on fixed incomes including the elderly, will run the risk of going hungry this winter.

Founded by USA Weekend Magazine, “Make A Difference Day” is the largest national day of helping others. The goal is to inspire and encourage local residents to participate in community service projects. Large or small, as individuals or in groups, one-day or ongoing- the nature of the service isn’t as important as simply giving your time, effort, resources, skills, or support to make a difference in the lives of people in your community.

AmeriCorps, along with the Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service, traditionally sponsors a campaign to collect canned beef stew and other canned goods. Collected food is donated to local food pantries, emergency feeding centers and designated stations for senior citizens in the community.

“It’s a natural relationship for us because it’s about volunteering and serving,” said Sherrie Bennett, MSUCorps director. “It’s something we have a very strong commitment to and is about helping people in our own community.”

Drop off boxes (red with the AmeriCorps’ logo) will be located at: Wal-Mart, Kroger, Family Dollar, Dollar General, Big Lots, Slone’s Market, Rowan County Public Library, MSU Bookstore, MSU Camden-Carroll Library, as well as various buildings on Morehead State University’s campus and in the Morehead community.

Volunteers are still needed to help pass out handbills and to collect donated food. Additional information is available by calling (606) 783-5302.
