Student Spotlights

Joseph Harris:
Major: Secondary English Education.
Graduation Date: May 2009
Hometown: Inez, KY
High School: Sheldon Clark High School
College Experience: Big Sandy CTC for 2 years and earned an AA degree before
coming to MSU to complete my BA in Secondary English Ed.
Experience at MSU:
The STEPS program at MSU has enabled me to pursue my teaching passion
without putting my family on the back burner. Overall, my experience
at MSU has been a great one and as excited as I am about finally
graduating in May and beginning my career, it still saddens me some
that I will be leaving such a wonderful campus behind. Professors like
Dr. Robert Lockhart and my cooperating teacher, Terry Lewis, at RCSHS,
have opened my mind to ideas in English for my classroom that I am
eager to use so I am very eager to begin my career and thankful that
MSU has placed people like them in my path.
*Joseph assumed a new position this fall as a English teacher at Greenup County High School.

Charla Sue Prust:
Age: 48
Status: Sophomore
Reason for Choosing MSU: Location
Major: Veterinary Technician
Reason for Returning to School:
It has always been my dream to return to school. I worked for over twenty years as a nursing assistant, raising my family and taking care of business. One day I looked around and my children were all adults, out on their own and didn’t need me to take care of them every day. We moved to Morehead in 2001 and for 6 years I watched as school would begin every fall and end every spring. Eventually I found that I could no longer think of a reason to not return to school. So, I went and took my ACT and applied to Morehead. At first it was a very strange feeling. As I sat in my classes I worried at times that someone was going to pull me out of class and tell me I didn’t belong there. But here I am, two years later still going strong. I will be applying to the Vet Tech program in the fall. I would like to study Equine Science and one day open a horse rescue ranch.
Rose Marye Prust:
Age: 27
Status: Sophomore
Reason for Choosing MSU: Location
Major: Double major in History and Spanish
Reason for Returning to School:
Like my mother a part of me had always dreamed of returning to school. I graduated from high school in 2000 and my first attempt at college that fall was a miserable failure. I clearly was not ready. I left school promising myself that I would one day return. Before I knew it I woke up and several years had passed. In that time I had worked several jobs, trying to find my place in this world without any success. When my mother returned to school it was a wake up call for me. If she was brave enough to return to school at her age then what was my excuse for staying out? I entered the following semester and from the moment I sat in my first class I had a feeling of coming home. Finally, after my years of searching I found the place where I belong, the place that I wanted to dedicate my life to. When I graduate I plan to do graduate studies and obtain my Ph.D. so that I can one day teach history at the college level.
