This program prepare its graduate to provide state of the art, research based instruction to children in primary through the fifth grade.

Degree programs in history provide both breadth in area coverage and depth in practicing history research, preparing students to enter the teaching profession, applied fields such as heritage work, or graduate programs in history and related fields. There is a major and minor in history. The minor is offered on the main campus, MSU at Prestonsburg, and the University Center of the Mountains in Hazard.

Middle Grades program is a teacher education degree program with various component areas to be chosen by the candidate. Social work is a profession for those who find fulfillment and reward in making a difference in the everyday lives of individuals. Specifically, social workers help those in need of critical resources including: medical and mental health services, income maintenance, child welfare and protection, domestic violence intervention, and assistance for the elderly. Social work also offers the opportunity to improve the community and make it a better place to live. The bachelors of social work (BSW) prepares students as generalist practitioners for entry-level professional practice.

This program prepares our graduates to work with students with a range of disabilities in either the so-called mild (LBD: e.g. learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, behavioral disorders, etc.) or severe range (MSD: e.g. severe intellectual disability, autism, multiple disability, etc.) in public school programs at any grade level. It also certify graduate to teach in the middle school.

Students can receive an Associate or Bachelors of University Studies degree. A major, minor, or area of concentration is not required for the Bachelor of University Studies degree. Students may take a wide variety of subjects or concentrate all studies beyond the general education requirements in a single discipline.
- University Studies - Professional Studies
Students are now able to apply an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degrees from Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) toward the completion of an online Bachelor of University Studies in Professional Studies at MSU.
