Students may want to join organizations related to the discipline of Psychology. Doing so offers students a chance to explore the various areas of the discipline through programs, distributed information, and research presentation opportunities, as well as the opportunity to meet people who have similar interests. Students in our region often choose to join the Kentucky Academy of Sciences (KAS) and/or the Kentucky Psychological Association (KPA). In addition, students can become Student Affiliates of the American Psychological Association (APA) or the American Psychological Society (APS). Regional divisions of APA also provide good opportunities for students. Students at MSU often join the Midwest Psychological Association (MPA) or the Southeastern Psychological Association (SEPA). Finally, each area of psychology offers smaller organizations that students may also join. Approach faculty for information about these opportunities. You may click on the icons below for more information about some of these organizations.
Student affiliates in APA can receive The Monitor and discounts on other journals and information. The APA publishes a number of informative books for students and young professional psychologists. For example, Careers Paths in Psychology describes the kinds of professional opportunities available to psychology majors and the educational levels usually required for those positions. The APA also has available a guide to choosing graduate programs, called Graduate Study in Psychology. The Publication Manual describes the professional style of writing for psychology, and is an invaluable source. Please contact the APA if you wish to purchase these materials. In addition, student affiliates of the APS receive The Observer and other materials from their student divisions. Psi Chi and the Department of Psychology also maintains copies of these books, and others.
