| What is Bike Sharing? Bike sharing is a program that allows for short-term bicycle rental to be available at central, unattended locations. Using advanced technology, the program acts as a form of public transportation with automated bicycle release and locking at bike stations, and manual locks for standard bike racks. The bikes are specially made to endure frequent and rough handling, and weather, while also deterring theft and vandalism. The bikes may also have an onboard computer which tracks mileage ridden and record both mileage and calories to personal user profiles. This environmentally efficient form of transportation is designed to fill the gap for those trips that are too far to walk, and too short for other modes of public transit or automobiles.
