Internet Issues
November 15, 2007

There are some issues state-wide with internet access.  This is not just impacting MSU, but all higher education sites in the state.  The folks who need to fix this are diligently working on it and we hope for a resolution soon.  The SGA is likely to receive feedback on this from concerned students, so we'll keep you  informed of the situation as we find out more.

- Mr. Brent Jones, Director of Information Technology

Emergency Weather Plan
November 1, 2007

MSU will be distributing the MSU EMERGENCY PROCEDURES HANDBOOK in the very near future.  This booklet is a quick reference of all emergency procedures and will soon be sent to every MSU office.

I also suggest signing up for e2campus. This will allow students to receive alerts for weather, safety, and special events. Alerts may be sent to you by e-mail and to your mobile phone by text message.

- Mr.  Harry Gunn, Risk & Compliance Manager

Baird Music Hall
October 17, 2007

Last year we revisited the issue of building hours to address campus police concerns about building security, student safety, and environment (sound that bothers Baird area residents), while extending access to music students for practice. I worked with Kevin Koett and Joe Cline and his staff to
examine the issues and we agreed on the hours outlined below.

Monday thru Friday- 6:00 am - Midnight
Saturday - 8:00 am - Midnight
Sunday - 8:00 am - Midnight

Students have been informed of these hours and have been asked to report any problems with building access during these hours. Since the beginning of the term I've had a handful of complaints about the building not being open as scheduled. Chief Cline has been informed and the police have redoubled their efforts to ensure that the building is open as scheduled. I've not received any complaints from students concerning the amount of time available for practice.

Please let me know if you have any further questions regarding this issue.

- Scott McBride, Chair of Department of Music

 Recommended Bike Rack Adjustments
September 21, 2007

At long last, our new bike racks have arrived on campus.  We need to make plans to get the racks installed in the near future.  When we started this discussion last year, we received input from the Campus Improvement Committee through Brandon Green.  We discussed the number of bikes that could need to be accommodated in each location.  The locations that were recommended are listed below.

1.  In front of Aduc lower level facing bookstore
2.  Side door of ADUC mid level where handicapped door opens to Employee parking lot
3.  By ATM machine right next to Howell-McDowell
4.  West Mignon bottom of steps facing Mignon Hall
5.  Mignon Hall on patio
6.  East Mignon patio (by front doors)
7.  Alumni Tower patio (catwalk side)
8.  Back side of Ginger hall along Battson-Oates Drive
9.  Library off to the side but still in front somewhere  (move from Carter)
10. behind Rader Hall in Crosswaith plaza  (move from Regents)
11. between Lappin and Combs (side of Lappin)

It appeared that we could accommodate the numbers in the locations above by ordering racks that would serve either 7 bikes or 9 bikes.  We have six of the 7 bike sized racks and six of the 9 bike sized racks.

Laughlin Weight Room Renovation
September 26, 2006

AFTER INTERVIEWEING STUDENTS WHO USE THE LAUGHLIN WEIGHT ROOM, THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS WERE MADE:

ALL EQUIPMENT- WEIGHTS & MACHINES-NEED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST, BENDING (WEIGHTS & BARS), MALFUNCTIONS, RIPPED PADDING, AND AGE

Items that students requested duplicates of include: the squat machine, the cross cable machine, bench presses, lap pull-down machine, and extra pairs of each set of dumbbell weights.

Items that students requested be removed due to limited use include: the grey machine in the right back corner that allows for multiple exercises; students recommended it be replaced with an Abs- bar and a Chin-Up bar, easily placed against the walls to allow for more space. Students also requested the removal of the lockers due to very little use and the need for more space. They recommended that maybe a few lockers be placed in the corner, but there is no need for the amount currently present. Lastly, the removal of the second Leg-Press machine was requested due to little or no use.

Dumbbells: Students interviewed requested all new sets of dumbbells, two pairs of each weight, with weights ranging from five to one-hundred-and-twenty pounds. Currently, weights are limited to a maximum of eighty pounds leaving no room for progression, and all students mentioned limited accessibility to existing weights due to limited amounts and missing pairs. An organizational rack was also requested to keep weights off of the floor, which also helps keep them from being broken.

Plates: Students requested they be in standard measures versus metric, with more five, ten, twenty-five, and forty-five pound plates.

Miscellaneous: Students mentioned that the AC does not work properly, only one unit works some of the time, and would like central AC put into the room to make exercise more comfortable. A new stereo system was also mentioned, along with new full-length mirrors.

Students interviewed referred to the weight room as a “jail cell” and recommended new paint in brighter colors along with new mats, which will also make the room cleaner. Making the space bigger was also widely mentioned. It gets cramped and uncomfortable when there are several people in the room at one time.

Students interviewed who did not use the Laughlin Weight Room stated they preferred the Wellness Center because it was clean, newer, they did not have the proper education on how to use free-weights, and females specifically mentioned being intimidated by the overwhelming presence of males.

Eagle Card - Debit/Credit Functions on Campus
September 28, 2006

It was brought to Doug Snedegar attention the fact that MSU Eagle Cards have a debit card function through US Bank, and work at off campus locations such as Wal-Mart, but do not work anywhere on campus. The problem still remains even though on-campus locations now accept major types of credit/debit cards.

Mr. Snedegar said that the office was aware of this situation, and recently they have been investigating this issue and have been trying to produce solutions to this inconvenience.

Mr. Snedegar proposed that the reason the Debit Card function does not work anywhere on campus is because of the Interlink system. (This symbol is located on the back of the Eagle Card next to the US Bank symbol). He explained that the locations on campus have not yet filed with Interlink, which means they do lot have the software or proper programming to have this operated.

Mr. Snedegar did offer the possible solutions/programs that could be implemented in the near future. He informed that some of the businesses on campus are trying to connect with Interlink, and the school is trying to get a function where money can go on the card to pay for everything. For example, a student can use the card anywhere on campus: pay parking tickets, buy food, buy books and supplies at the bookstore, pay for a lost/stolen card, etc.

Add-a-class fee during the semester...?
October 3, 2006

There is absolutely no add-a-class fee, but there is a drop-a-class fee of $10.00. She did say that the only way a student will be charged for adding a class is if it is over the allowed 18 hours, and she also said if the student enrolls in an online class there is a fee for taking online classes.

TV Cable Problems in Residence Halls
October 3, 2006

Currently channels 2, 4, 8, 10 & 13 are fuzzy. This is due to moisture in the lines of the particular receiver for the network channels. The lines have been "bled" and the pressure turned back on so these should be corrected within the day.

Channel 9 (WYMT) is the CBS affiliate out of Hazard and it is a problem on their end. We have been told that it could be a month before that channel is back on air.

Channel 5 (CW) is out because an amplifier on that receiver is bad. A new amp has been order and as soon as it is received the channel will be back on air. We are expecting this to be the end of this week or the beginning of next week depending on shipping date.

My office has received many calls from concerned students also. Information Technology is doing everything in their power to correct the situation as quickly as possible. Please pass this information along to students.

Complaints of a Gap in Food Service Hours at Alumni Dining
October 10, 2006

Spoke with Melinda about Alumni's hours. Melinda informed me that there is always food in Alumni. She explained this by briefing me on the hours. She said the Grill Works and Sub line does not open until 4:00 pm, but the buffet always serves food. She said that the main lines in the buffet, the Exhibition and Comfort lines, close at 2pm, but the deli, salad bar, grill, soup, and pasta lines are open from 10am-8pm (closing). She said that there is constant food served from 7am-8pm in the buffet, and Grill Works and the Sub line serves food from 4pm-2am. I told her that students were concerned about not having food served from 3:00-4:30, but she said there is always food, in some form. She did ask if there was some way we could pass the word along and advertise it because she said "students are always welcome".

Extending Library Hours
October 23, 2006

Currently the library is looking into the feasibility of extending library hours until 12:00 am during finals week. Currently they are not considering extending hours during mid-terms week or hours in general. Dean Pritchard informed me that most likely the library will decide to extend library hours during finals week to 12:00 am with in the next week and that the extended hours will be publicized if they are approved.

Establishing a Resource Room for Education Majors
October 23, 2006

Many education majors have expressed the concern and interest of having a location to use equipment such as paper cutters, shape stamping tools, etc... The LRC located on the bottom floor of the library is interested in adding this function to assist students that may need such equipment. Heather Pennington a Student Life Committee Liaison and College of Education Representative is working with students in her college to compile a list of useful items to submit to the LRC for their consideration. The resolution of this concern will be followed by a full report when it is complete.

Time Conflict in Class Scheduling for Organic Chemistry and Zoology in the
Spring 2006 Calendar
November 6, 2006

Dr. Magrane, Chair of the Biology and Environmental Science Department informed us that it really isn’t possible to change the time slot for zoology to accommodate the conflict of Zoology and Organic Chemistry. He informed us that these two classes aren’t traditionally taken at the same time; usually zoology comes in an earlier semester than does organic. He also brought to light that zoology has been in the same time slot for at least the past 31 years, the time that he has been here at MSU. Before spring 2006 organic chemistry was offered at a different time, but in the spring of 2006 it was moved to the same time slot as zoology. (This concern was forwarded to another SGA Student Life - Academic Affairs Liaison that works with the Chemistry Department for follow up.)

Obstructed Visibility When Pulling Onto University Blvd. From Laughlin Parking
November 10, 2006

During our fall campus safety walk this issue was brought to our attention. We removed the first parking space north of the entrance to the Laughlin-Cartmell Parking Lot. I will have Captain Scott Barker look at the area again and make a recommendation to us what other options we might have at the intersection without loosing any more parking spaces.

Food Service Questions
February 12, 2007

The following questions are some that were subimtted to SGA at the Concerns Table held in ADUC before Christmas, these are regarding Food Services and were asnwered by Steve Hoyng, Director of Food Services for Aramark:

1. Alumni Food Court stays open until 2 am. This has been the casesince August when school started this year.

2. Each meal plan membership comes with 4 guest passes for RFoC. Meal plan prices are designed for the individual student that holds the meal plan. The prices of the meal plans would be higher if this practice was allowed. MSU meal plan prices are one of lowest in the state of Kentucky.

3. Are you charged for cheese at other restaurants, fast food etc?
This is a common practice.

4. I do not know of any new restaurants that we are opening in Fall 07 at this time. Any suggestions?

5.
Q: Can the Lids to the cups in ADUC be put near the drinks instead of after you go through the line?

A: That would be our first choice. When we had the lids there before, the students would put chicken nuggets etc. in the cup and pay for a drink. I would be open to suggestions on how to prevent this situation. It makes sense to have the lids by the drinks.

6. We did try leaving the ADUC food court open last year. Taco Bell and Chick-fil-A were open until 9 pm. The customer counts/business was very good for about four weeks. The business dropped down considerably after that time period. It was a business decision at that time to only stay open till 5pm for this year. We are open to suggestions concerning later hours.
