Frequently Asked Questions about SOAR
Is there a fee to attend SOAR?
No. Unlike most colleges and universities, MSU does not charge a fee for its student orientation program.
Is SOAR a two-day or one-day program?
SOAR is a one-day program.
Should I arrive early?
Check-in will begin at 8:45 a.m. If you do arrive early you can attend an early bird session about Online Services and the Laptop Program in Adron Doran University Center 302.
How do I get to campus?
Morehead, Ky is located off Interstate 64 at Exit 137 approximately 60 miles west of Huntington, W.Va., and 60 miles east of Lexington, Ky.
1. Traveling from the east on I-64, turn left off the exit ramp onto KY 32. Traveling from the west on I-64,turn right off exit ramp onto KY 32.
2. Travel approximately three miles and go through six traffic lights.
3. At the last traffic light (“B”), turn left onto U.S. 60.
4. Continue on U.S. 60 (the bypass), turn left at the second traffic light (“D”) onto University Blvd.
Where should I park?
For the April 17 program, you will need to park in the By Pass lot (Campus Map). You will be able to ride the shuttle buses and vans. For the other SOAR sessions, you may park in the lots designated on the campus map. Shuttle vans will be available. Please do not park in reserved numbered spaces or privately owned parking lots.
If we arrive the night before, where can we stay?
A variety of hotel accommodations are located close to campus.

Should my parents attend?
We encourage parents to attend SOAR. There is a lot of information provided during SOAR.
What should I wear to SOAR?
Dress for the day is casual. You will have to walk, so wear comfortable shoes.
Are meals provided?
We provide a continental breakfast in the morning. Since we do not charge an orientation fee, we do not provide lunch. However, Dining Services will be open for lunch. They accept all major credit cards.
Will I get my EagleCard at SOAR?
No. You will have your picture taken – so be prepared! We ask that you do not wear hats or other head coverings for your photo. Your EagleCard will be ready for pick-up when you arrive in August.
Will I get to see my residence hall room?
Although we would love to show you your future residence hall room during the tours, we are unable to do so due to student occupancy, summer camps, and scheduled maintenance. A show room from a suite and double occupancy buildings will be available for viewing.
Do parents and students stay together all day?
Students and parents stay together for the morning sessions. In the afternoon, students go to advising without their parents. Parents will attend their own orientation session during the student’s academic advising session.
