SpaceTrek is an eight-day educational experience in space science for high school girls made possible thanks to a partnership between the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Morehead State University. This workshop/camp is designed for girls entering 10th grade who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Under the guidance of highly-qualified STEM educators, leading researchers and aerospace engineers at MSU, participants will:

  • Make observations and prediction, collect and interpret data and draw conclusions about the atmosphere.
  • Build electronic devices that demonstrate principles of circuits and components.
  • Work in cooperative mission teams to build a small satellite (CricketSat).
  • Calibrate a scientific instrument to produce accurate data.
  • Set up a ground station for tracking the satellite.
  • Use software programs to receive and interpret satellite data.
  • Create a professional presentation of mission results.
  • Hear from female role models in STEM.
  • Develop a strong sense of self-efficacy.
  • Create a statewide network of STEM-interested peers.

When and where is SpaceTrek?

The camp will take place July 12-20, 2019, at the Craft Academy and Morehead State University's Space Science Center, a state-of-the-art facility housing a satellite development laboratory, space tracking antennas, electronic laboratories and the digital Star Theater for planetarium and laser shows. The center is located in Smith-Booth Hall at 235 Martindale Drive on the Morehead state campus.

Key Camp Facilitators

SpaceTrek is directed jointly by Craft Academy staff, MSU's Space Science Center faculty and staff and AAUW members:
  • Jennifer Carter, executive director of academic services for the Craft Academy, serves as executive director and instructor.
  • Kim Boggs, co-founder of AAUW, serves as director.
  • Dr. Ben Malphrus, director of the Space Science Center, along with his team of scientists and engineers, will be involved in the workshop activities.

What is the campus experience?

Life on campus is a unique experience where participants stay in Grote-Thompson Hall. While most of the time will be spent in the Space Science Center, there will be plenty of opportunities to explore the campus and participate in extracurricular activities such as Zumba, Yoga and more.

What is Craft Academy?

The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics is a dual-credit residential high school for academically exceptional Kentucky students. It is housed on the campus of Morehead State University, consistently ranked as one of the safest campuses in the Commonwealth. The Academy opened in August 2015 with the goal of meeting the unique educational needs of academically gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors. A college-level curriculum allows students to finish high school while also completing up to two years of university coursework.
