Sport Management

As the 6th largest industry in America, the field of sport has created a demand for qualified managers and sport leaders.  The MSU sport management program prepares students with the skills to plan, organize, and direct sport programs, events, and facilities.   As only one of two nationally approved programs in Kentucky, the MSU sport management program was developed with national standards as a guide.  It is a 128 credit hour Area of Concentration which prepares the student for a career in a variety of areas within the sport management industry.  Sixty credit hours of the Area of Concentration are taken within the program and taught by sport management faculty.

 
Undergraduate Program Objectives
 

Students will demonstrate competencies in the following areas: 

    1. Socio-cultural context of sport
    2. Management and leadership in sport
    3. Ethics in sport management
    4. Marketing in sport
    5. Public relations in sport
    6. Financial management in sport
    7. Legal aspects in sport
    8. Research in sport
    9. Economics in sport
    10. Governance in sport
    11. Communication in sport
    12. Field experience in sport management

 

  Highlights  

  • Comprehensive Internship-a comprehensive internship will be completed at the end of your coursework.  Students in the program have participated in internship programs in all areas of sport management; interscholastic athletic programs, intercollegiate athletic programs, not-for-profit organizations, private sector, and international sport organizations to name a few.
  • Graduates of the program have gone on to pursue degrees beyond the Bachelor of Arts including; Master’s degree in sport management, Law, Masters in Business Administration (MBA), Fitness, and Marketing
  • Generalist program that prepares the graduate for employment in a variety of areas within the sport business industry.
