Cooperative Education and Internships

A way of learning by doing. Students put theory learned in the classroom to work in real life. Students may do an internship for credit or not for credit; for pay or not for pay. MSU has several departments and courses that your child may register for and receive credit (check with specific departments) or MSU 339 - Cooperative Education, an experiential education course offered by Career Services.

On-Campus Recruitment

Employers frequently visit campus during the regular fall and spring semesters. Employers often visit to:

  • Share information about their organization
  • Promote internship or job openings
  • Share tips and advice on the job search process and professional etiquette
  • Conduct interviews with potential candidates

Career Fairs

MSU hosts two career fairs per year (one in the fall and one in the spring). These large events typically bring in 80+ employers and graduate programs from diverse industries and disciplines.

Eagle CareerNet

Eagle CareerNet is our online career management system, powered by GradLeaders. Students and alumni may upload their resumes and job search documents on this system and make them available to employers. CareerNet has a calendar of career events and is also where MSU posts information on internships, seasonal, part-time, and full-time jobs. Students will also have access to employer contact information through this system.

Encourage YOUR STUDENT to:

  1. Attend class: Employers say that they want employees that have a good work ethic. Faculty are good references and have contacts with employers.
  2. Put effort into their classes and learn communication skills: Employers say that good communication, both in writing (including email) and speaking are the most valued skills. Employers DO look at GPA.
  3. Take responsibility for their own career decisions and job search: A college degree will not get your child a job. They must be able to sell their skills to an employer. Employers want applicants that have learned to take initiative and have problem solving skills.
  4. Attend workshops, career fairs, and other events that will help them develop professional skills and networks.
  5. Dress for success. No visible tattoos or piercings. No cracks! (No low cut tops or low cut pants). Neat hairstyles and natural hair colors.
  6. Take advantage of services and mentoring available through MSU, including MSU Career Services, their academic advisor, and faculty.
  7. Do an internship, co-op, or service learning class. NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) reports that 70% of employers require that new hires have experience or internships. Many employers are using the internship program as a feeder system to hire full time employees.
