Reading

Morehead State's enhanced reading program will help you perform better in college courses by improving your reading skills. Through enhanced courses, you'll develop a reading and speaking vocabulary, improve your comprehension of the written word and enhance your reading rate to create reading fluency.

Enhanced reading courses are not a one-size-fits all program; what you learn will be tailored to your specific needs. At the beginning of each semester, instructors will administer a pre-test and extensively diagnose your reading skills. Thorough analysis of your strengths will be conducted to determine skill areas which need improvement. You will also take a post-test at the end of each semester to assess your progress.

Which reading course should I take?

Incoming students who have an ACT subtest score in reading of less than 20 are required to take a reading placement test.

MSU offers two developmental reading courses, both of which focus on diagnostic reading comprehension and improving reading rates.

  • If you have an ACT reading score of 17 or less, you must enroll in Strategic Reading I (EDEL 096). If you scored 18 or 19 on the reading ACT test, you must enroll in Strategic Reading II (EDEL 097).

Vocabulary Development

Instructors have developed materials to provide you with vocabulary lessons and practice. MSU strategic reading instructors have authored multiple sets of context sentences and vocabulary tests (on 11 different vocabulary grade levels) to aid in your understanding of vocabulary. The faculty-developed vocabulary tests are used to assess your progress.

Comprehension Skills

Another goal of enhanced writing courses is to improve your reading comprehension skills. You will do this through the use of high-interest reading materials and timely articles and stories that promote discussion to enhance your cognitive skills and reading comprehension.

Reading Rate/Fluency

To increase your reading rate and fluency, you will be given reading assignments based on your pretest vocabulary score. This part of the program enhances your ability to concentrate as you read as it increases your reading rate. Increasing your reading rate will eliminate the need to re-read material and will make you a more effective reader.

Student Goals

  • Develop reading vocabulary, including addressing word attack methods when needed, as well as knowledge of meanings of familiar and unfamiliar words.
  • Develop reading comprehension, including the meanings of words and the broader meanings of passages.
  • Improve reading rate, with the understanding some materials require a slower pace while others, such as reading for enjoyment, can be read at a faster pace.
  • Improve study skills.
  • Foster increased interest in reading fiction/nonfiction for enjoyment.
