Apply to the Craft Academy

Craft Academy applicants are high school sophomores who will have completed geometry, algebra I, and algebra II by the end of their sophomore year. Students are selected based on ACT scores, academic grades from ninth and tenth grades, interest in advanced careers in science, technology, engineering and math, student responses to application essay questions, interviews by Academy staff members, and recommendations from teachers and other individuals who can attest to a student’s need and preparedness for the program.

Craft Academy applicants for Fall 2018 must:
  • Be a current resident of the state of Kentucky;
  • Be a high school sophomore;
  • Complete geometry, algebra I and algebra II prior to enrollment;
  • Score a minimum 18 English, 22 reading, and 22 math on the ACT; and
  • Submit a completed application online and submit all required supplemental materials as a single packet, no later than Feb. 1, 2018.
Required supplemental items include an official high school transcript, ACT test scores, answers to the five essay questions (found on the application) and three letters of recommendation, one of which must be written by school personnel and at least one written by a community member.


Cost of Attendance

The cost of tuition, room and a meal plan are covered by the Academy. Students will be responsible for purchasing textbooks, additional meals and any other personal or miscellaneous expenses. There is no fee to apply.

Application Directions

  1. Select "Apply Now."
  2. Select "Create Account." Create an account for your Craft Academy application, fill out your personal information, and select a password.
    1. Answer the question, "Which statement best describes you?", with "Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics."
    2. Your Entry Term should be "FALL TERM 2018."
    3. Your Academic Level should be "CRAFT ACADEMY."
    4. Your Academic Program should be "CRAFT ACADEMY." 
  3. Start your application by entering your personal and academic information.
    1. Under "Application Listing," select "CRAFT ACADEMY APPLICATION."
    2. Select the area of interest "Fall Term 2018 - CRAFT ACADEMY," then select, "Start a new Application here."
    3. Complete the online application. Your Entry Term should be "Fall Term 2018," your Academic Level should be "Craft Academy," and your Academic Program should be "Craft Academy," then click "Submit."
    4. Complete the next section titled, "Personal." Please answer all questions.
    5. Complete the section titled, "Academic Plans." For "Applying as which type of student", answer "High School Student Program" and for "Applying to Enroll" answer "Fall Term 2018."
    6. Complete the next section titled, "Family," then Save and Continue.
    7. Complete the next section titled, "Academics." Your Academic Program should be "Craft Academy."
    8. Five essay questions are located at the bottom of this page. Please PRINT these for your future reference, then Save and Continue.
    9. Certification - Certify the statement and click "Submit Application."
  4. Once you submit your application, you will be directed to a thank you page which contains information on all supplemental items, and the Craft Academy's mailing address (see below).
  5. Mail in your supplemental items - All supplemental items must be mailed as a single, complete packet containing:
  • 5 Essay Question Responses (from the online application)
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation
  • Official Transcripts
  • ACT Test Scores

You will receive an email confirming your submission once we have received your online application and all supplemental materials.


Application and Selection Dates for Class of 2020

  • Applications are accepted beginning Aug. 1, 2017.
  • The application deadline is Feb. 1, 2018. Submit your completed application online by Feb. 1, 2018 and mail in your supplemental items as a packet postmarked no later than Feb. 1, 2018.
  • Students selected for interviews will be notified after the Feb. 1 deadline, and interviews will be held Feb. 24, 2018 - time TBD.
  • Final selections will be made in March 2018. 60 high school sophomores will be selected to begin the Fall 2018 semester at Craft Academy as high school juniors.

Letters of Recommendation

Students applying to the Craft Academy will be selected on their high academic achievements as supported by GPA and ACT scores. Letters of recommendation provide additional information with regard to other skills and dispositions that would make this applicant a viable applicant for acceptance into this prestigious academy.

Overall categories the selection committee take into consideration include but are not limited to:
  • Academic achievement, awards, and honors
  • Student desire and expressed interest in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math career
  • Character (ethical and moral)
  • Service to the community
  • Perseverance
  • Demonstrated maturity and ability to transition from high school to independent living at a young age
  • Additional talents that would likely add diversity to the Academy


Letters of recommendation can be submitted a few different ways:
  • You may submit your 3 letters of recommendation as part of your supplemental materials packet.
  • You or the author may mail their letter to the address above.
