W-4 Form Information

As a result of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed in December 2017, the IRS redesigned the Payroll Federal Tax Form W-4 for tax year 2020. The new form will no longer have an option to claim the number of dependents, but instead will allow users to estimate allowable deductions from their earnings (other taxes, health insurance, charitable gifts, etc.) to reach their tax withholding amount. The change is an IRS effort to assist taxpayers with forecasting their tax liability more accurately.

The new form can be viewed on the IRS website at

When the new calendar year 2020 starts, employees will not be required to submit a new form.  However, any federal tax changes made Jan. 1, 2020 or later will require employees to use the new form. Employees that currently claim “exempt” from paying federal income taxes on the Federal Tax Form will need to complete a new form.  Employees hired on or after Jan. 1, 2020 will be required to complete the new form.

If you are considering making any changes to your W-4, please consult your tax preparer or accountant for advice on your specific situation. As always, payroll staff cannot give tax advice regarding the completion of withholding forms.
