Helen LaFrance

Helen LaFrance (b. 1919; Boaz, Kentucky) has been painting and making dolls since she was a young girl. Her mother encouraged her artistic interests and made paints for Helen by mixing laundry bluing with flowers and berries.
LaFrance has fond memories of her childhood in rural west Kentucky, and those memories serve as the subject matter for her paintings.

Her subjects includes farm work, baptisms, rural landscapes, and social occasions. She took up painting full-time after her parents and sisters were all dead and her grandchildren were grown.

LaFrance continues to paint, and her reputation as an artist continues to grow. In 2004, she was recognized as a member of the Gallery of Great Black Kentuckians by the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights.
