Sociology - MA

The Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology allows for concentration in three areas: general sociology, criminology and chemical dependency. The program is entirely online. All concentrations require basic courses in theory and research methods and provides students with broad critical and analytical skills that can be applied on individual, organizational and societal levels.
The program is recognized by Onlinemasters.com as one of the top 10 online sociology programs in the nation. It was the only Kentucky higher education institution to make the list.

You may pursue the following concentrations:
  • Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology: General Sociology Concentration
  • Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology: Criminology Concentration
  • Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology: Chemical Dependency Concentration

Program Requirements

  1. General admission to graduate study.
  2. Completion of 18 credit hours of undergraduate work in sociology or related field, including sociological theory, social science data analysis and research methodology.
  3. A minimum GPA of 3.0 in all sociology courses.
  4. Undergraduate GPA of 2.75 required.
  5. Assessment of the student's potential for successful completion of the program will also be based on the following:    
  • Submission of a two-page typewritten statement of educational and career goals relative to the program.
  • When an applicant's materials do not clearly suggest the potential for successful completion of the program, the department Graduate Admissions Committee may also require an interview of the applicant.

Career Opportunities

Combined with other skills and courses, a Master of Arts in Sociology can prepare you for a career in teaching at the post-secondary level (with appropriate teaching credentials or certification), pursuing a doctoral program in sociology or a related field, advancement in your current field or environmental and social activism.
