Profile

Ellen Johnson Mosley is the Visiting Assistant Professor of Music/Flute at Morehead State University and Principal Flutist in the Cave Run Symphony Orchestra. She performs across the United States with the Baird Winds, Traverso Colore Baroque Ensemble, and the Tornado Alley Flutes. Dr. Mosley served as Principal Flutist of the Delano Chamber Orchestra for five seasons and has performed as a concerto soloist with the Cave Run Symphony Orchestra, Delano Chamber Orchestra, Morehead State University Symphony Band, and the Concordia University Symphony. She is an active adjudicator and presenter at National Flute Association (NFA) conventions, commissioning member of the Flute New Music Consortium, and recipient of the Gunstream community engagement grant from the College Music Society. Dr. Mosley holds degrees from Florida State University (DM), the University of Texas at Austin (MM) and Wichita State University (BM). Her flute teachers include Eva Amsler, Marianne Gedigian, and Frances Shelly. Schools that have welcomed her as a Guest Artist/Clinician include Emporia State University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Kansas State University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Mosley previously served as the Coordinator of Education for the Wichita Symphony and on the music faculty at Butler Community College in El Dorado, KS and Concordia University in Austin, TX.

Community Engagement and Outreach opportunities have inspired Ellen to serve throughout the United States.  She is currently Vice President of the Flute Society of Kentucky and member of the Development Committee for the National Flute Association. She has also served as the Manager for the Wichita Symphony Youth Orchestras Program and board member for the Austin Flute Society, George B. Tack Memorial Flute Committee and Delano Chamber Players in Wichita, KS. She served as President of the Austin Flute Society (2010-2011) and Chair of the Career and Artistic Development Committee (2011-2016) for the National Flute Association. Several of her interviews with the National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition Winners have been published in the Flutist Quarterly. Dr. Mosley also founded the Concordia Community Music Academy in Austin, TX and is a recipient of the College Music Society's Community Engagement Seed Grant. Her work in developing the Summer Flute Ensemble Initiative – a two-week program bringing chamber ensemble opportunities to young flutists - has served as an outreach model for music programs seeking to bridge the gap between higher education and local communities.
