Talent Search awards academic tutoring certificates

Morehead State University’s Educational Talent Search (ETS) program collaborated with MSUCorps and Bath County Middle School to provide academic tutoring to eighth grade ETS students during the 2017-18 school year.

First year AmeriCorps tutor, Haley Wells, worked daily with eighth grade Educational Talent Search students with the goal to raise reading scores in Bath County. A total of 15 students received certificates of completion on May 23 for their participation and hard work in the academic tutoring program.

"As the first year as a tutor at the Bath County Middle School, I am proud to say this has been a successful year with my eighth grade students. The Educational Talent Search students are an exceptional group and made it easy to tutor them with their willingness to participate and desire to learn,” said Wells. “A few of the skills we covered that I will mention included active listening, reading, comprehension, organizational and test taking skills, which seemed to suit the curriculum. Overall, it was a great experience and I would be honored to volunteer again next year.”

MSU’s Talent Search is a program to encourage students to develop academic skills to assure their success in post-secondary education. The program works with more than 1,600 middle and high school students in grades 6 through 12 within an 11 county area.

The counties include: Bath, Carter, Elliott, Greenup, Johnson, Lewis, Magoffin, Menifee, Morgan, Powell and Rowan. Those who participate in this program receive services in four major program areas: Academic Counseling, Career Counseling, Financial Counseling and Personal Counseling to ensure graduation from high school and successful placement in the postsecondary institution of their choice.
