MSU production of 'Ghost: the Musical' opens

Morehead State University’s Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance is presenting the collaborative production “Ghost: The Musical” Tuesday, Nov. 27, at The Lucille Caudill Little Theatre in Breckinridge Hall.

“Musicals are the great ultimate collaboration between music, theatre and dance.” said Natasha Davis, associate professor of dance and choreographer. “It’s so many pieces to the puzzle where everybody is equal that if one piece falls off the whole thing will not work.”

“Ghost the Musical,” an adaptation from the hit film written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin, follows a young couple, Sam and Molly, whose future takes an uncertain turn after Sam’s untimely death. Trapped between two worlds, Sam refuses to leave Molly when he learns she is in danger. Desperate to communicate with her, he turns to a storefront psychic, Oda Mae Brown, who helps him protect Molly and avenge his death.

There’s more to the department than teaching the arts, it supplies students of all major’s value in all areas of their lives.

“We have so many students that either are not theatre majors or theatre minors who are also a part of our program because they understand the value of getting what they need academically, but also pairing it with something artistic, so it makes them well rounded in every area.” said Davis.

Davis, who has been instructing at MSU for 11 years, said whatever the students learn within the department, those skills can be applied to the real world. “It’s something in our department that is hitting every student in a way where when they come here they’re gaining something.”

Travis Clark, visiting associate professor of theatre and former student of Morehead State, said the program gave him a foundation to build his career upon.

“I learned how to be part of this living breathing art form,” said Clark. “How to work with people, how to see something through from beginning to end, how to collaborate with different people from all different walks of life, how to take this text and take the director’s vision and bring that to life.”

Clark said even though everything within the program is a collaboration, “Ghost: The Musical” has more layers and more moving pieces.

“Everything that we do is a huge collaboration over here. Ghost is no different in that regard, the only thing that’s different in this one is that you add in different elements,” said Clark. “We’re all able to put in our own unique spin on things and then meld that together and I think that’s my favorite part of the whole process.”

The production will continue from Nov. 28-30 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $11, $6 for seniors and non-MSU students and free with ID to MSU students.
