Let’s Do the Time Warp Again! MSU’s Costume Contest and “Rocky Horror” screening happens Halloween night

RHPS.pngMSU students may take pride in sporting blue and gold on campus most of the academic year. But this Halloween, an annual tradition will have some students sporting some truly unique attire and feeling a bit “Rocky.”

The annual MSU Costume Contest and Rocky Horror Picture Show will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, in the Golding-Yang Art Gallery inside the Claypool-Young Art Building. The event is free and open to the public.

The event opens with food and refreshments in the form of pizza, candy and “Rocky Horror Picture Show”-themed mocktails students can purchase, with proceeds benefiting Emerging Arts Leaders of Eastern Kentucky (EALEK).

This will also be the time students can sign-up for the costume contest, which will begin later at 7 p.m. in Claypool-Young Art Auditorium (CY 111). Costumes must be original and created by the students. A panel of jurors will award prizes for first, second and third place in the form of $75, $50 and $25 gift cards, respectively, to the University Store.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., a free screening of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” begins with subtitles so students and attendees can recite every line and lyric while offering popular reactions and new ones that seem emerge each year.

Jennifer Reis, director of the Golding-Yang Art Gallery, said this event has taken place for roughly 15 years, which is a testament to both the popularity of the film and the exhilarating evening it offers Eagles.
“This has consistently been an event where students create amazing costumes. It’s an opportunity for them to be self-expressive in a way they don’t have in other venues,” she said.

The event is sponsored by MSU’s Golding-Yang Art Gallery, the Department of Art and Design, Spectrum, EALEK, and the Buckner and Sally S. Hinkle Endowment for Humanities.
