The Chafin family presented the MSU foundation with a check for the Chafin Memorial Scholarship Endowment

MSU scholarship established in memory of former student

Justin Chafin is best remembered for a contagious spirit as a student, family member and friend, not to mention a love for both his brothers from Sigma Phi Epsilon and his years spend in Morehead. Now, the Morehead State University Foundation Inc. is proud to announce the endowment of the Justin T. Chafin Memorial Scholarship, a fund established shortly after the unexpected passing of the former Morehead State student in May 2016.

During his time at MSU, the Paintsville native studied biomedical sciences. He later went on to attend the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, where he pursued a doctorate degree in pharmacy.

Chafin’s family gathered on Morehead State’s campus to present a check to the MSU Foundation Inc. for $16,331 to grow the fund to the $25,000 endowment level. These funds will be invested indefinitely, with proceeds supporting scholarship opportunities for current MSU students who are members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

"Justin loved this University and his brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon. You could argue that his time here was the happiest of his life. It was clear to us that, in order to properly honor Justin, we had to take care of Morehead State first," said Robert Chafin, Justin's brother and President of the Justin T. Chafin Memorial Foundation. "As soon as this scholarship was announced, those here at Morehead went to work; marketing, promoting and soliciting contributions. We are extremely grateful for those efforts."

Funds for the scholarship were raised thanks to contributions from Chafin’s family, friends and Sigma Phi Epsilon brothers, along with proceeds from the annual Justin T. Chafin Memorial Golf Scramble in Paintsville.
