Fraternity helps Gateway House shelter

The Morehead State Psi Beta chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity recently helped the Gateway House by holding a food and necessities drive, March 1 through 15.

The MSU chapter of Omega Psi Phi currently has only one member, senior Dallas Bruton from Lexington. He held a successful book drive for the shelter last year and decided to contact the shelter again this year to see if there were other ways he could help. The Gateway House provides temporary shelter and resources to the area’s homeless population. Officials at the shelter gave Bruton a list of items they needed, and he launched the drive. Items collected included food items, cleaning and hygiene supplies, bedding and more. Donations were collected at locations including the Eagle Center, the Camden-Carroll Library and the Bert Combs Building.

In addition to collecting items for the drive, Bruton was able to collect donations through a cash app, which he used to purchase items from the list. In addition, graduate brothers from Omega Psi Phi chapters at other schools pitched in to help make the drive a success.

Stace Sievert, MSU coordinator of fraternity and sorority life and student organizations, praised Bruton’s efforts to give back to the community.

“Dallas Bruton is a one-man-show who has done a fine job of exemplifying fraternal values, through this effort and in all aspects of fraternity operations. Pretty much every semester, each fraternity and sorority Chapter on campus does some type of philanthropy and/or service project,” she said. “This is one of our common Greek values and is very important to all Greeks. Sometimes it’s a collection drive, sometimes it’s an event with an entrance fee, sometimes its service hours helping in the community, but MSU Greeks do a lot for MSU, Morehead and Rowan County.”
