MSU students perform at national flute convention

Students in Morehead State's Flute Choir were chosen to perform at the National Flute Association's 47th Annual Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday, Aug. 3.

The MSU Flute Choir was chosen from a pool of more than 400 applicants to perform a 30-minute recital at the event.

"Our flute ensemble was selected to perform from a competitive pool of international applicants, and we are honored to have represented Morehead State University at this event," said Dr. Ellen Mosley, visiting assistant professor of music. "A very small number of university flute choirs from across the United States were selected to perform."

Six students attended the convention along with Mosley, who conducted the choir during their performance. They were:

  • Trillium Back, a music performance major from Morehead.
  • Caleb Fouts, a music education major from Prestonsburg.
  • Brandon Hatfield, a music education major from Clay City.
  • Dylan Pierce, a music education major from Ashland.
  • Heather Simpson, a music performance major from Cold Spring.
  • Jacob Thacker, a music education major from Shelbiana.

This is the first-time flutists from MSU have performed at the event. Mosley said the students gained a lot from the experience.

"MSU flute students earned a distinct honor for themselves and our university by performing at the National Flute Convention," she said. "They benefitted from attending a variety of flute performances and masterclasses led by some of the most prominent names in our industry and developed a greater sense of community with professional flutists across the globe. I believe this experience will enable them to become even better musicians, mentors, and music teachers in Kentucky and beyond."
