Make Space for Reading poster

Make Space for Reading program begins March 28

Morehead State’s Star Theater is collaborating with CoffeeTree Books in Morehead to offer an online reading program to children.

The “Make Space for Reading” program begins Saturday, March 28, at 10:30 a.m. on Facebook Live. It will feature a reading and discussion of Adam Rex and Laurie Keller’s book “Pluto Gets the Call” presented by Susan Thomas, owner of CoffeeTree Books. The book is ideal for young readers. During the Facebook Live event, Thomas will also talk about space-themed books for middle school-aged children. Dr. Ben Malphrus, executive director of MSU’S Space Science Center, said the program is one way for the Star Theater to engage with the community during closures related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

“The Star Theater was created as a community asset. We wanted to create activities to continue to excite young people about science until we can re-open,” Malphrus said.

“The Star Theater’s mission is science education and community engagement. Even though the nation is at home to curtail the spread of the novel coronavirus, we can still provide authentic, engaging activities online to inspire the next generation of American scientists and engineers,” said Shanil Virani, director of the Star Theater. “So many families are at home and searching for meaningful activities for their children to do. By providing opportunities like our live book-reading sessions with Coffee Tree Books and our Facebook Live conversations with young, diverse astronomers from around the world, we want children in our community to keep dreaming big and reaching for the stars.”

Thomas said she is excited to work with the Star Theater to offer the event to children.

“We have always looked for ways to partner with other community organizations. Of course, we love the Star Theater and all the great programming it offers,” she said. “This is a scary time for everyone. When Shanil reached out, it was such a great reminder of why we do what we do and that we are all in this together.”
