Midnight in the Mountains dance marathon raises money for student resources

Last month, Morehead State University students pulled a different kind of all-nighter for a good cause.

MSU’s Student Government Association (SGA) hosted a dance marathon fundraiser event called Midnight in the Mountains last month at the Recreation and Wellness Center.

The six-hour dance marathon took place from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Feb. 21 and gave Eagle students the opportunity to give back. The night also included basketball and dodgeball tournaments, along with prize giveaways.

Midnight in the Mountains was able to raise just over $2,500 for the following resources: Eagle Essentials, which provides students with everyday items like non-perishable food items, hygiene products and school supplies at no cost; the Eagle Emergency Loan Fund, a fund supported by faculty and staff to provide short-term, interest free loans to students who are facing financial barriers; and the SHARE (Student Hardship Assistance Resource Emergency) Fund, which directly supports MSU students during times of financial hardship due to an emergency or life-altering situation.

Connor Tilford, president of campus involvement for SGA and a business management major from Ballard County, said he and the event organizers are extremely pleased with the amount of money Midnight in the Mountains raised and they plan to raise even more next year in a continual attempt to help students in need to succeed.

“Knowing some of the struggles that we have as students and the resources available on our campus to help mitigate struggles, the team came to an agreement that we need to help. This was our call to action,” Milford said. “The dance marathon, Midnight in the Mountains, was our way to raise funds to help and shed a light on these resources to all Eagles. We are all students here and we all have the same goal of graduation. I believe that we can all help to diminish the external obstacles in front of students from achieving graduation.”
