The School of English, Communication, Media and Languages includes MSU's programs in strategic communication and convergent media, English, foreign languages, and literature.


English majors become skilled writers and critical readers of literature who use language as effectively and precisely as possible. Learn more about our undergraduate English degrees.


MSU's Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing is one of the few undergraduate creative writing programs offered across the country. A minor in creative writing is also available.


The Master of Arts in English at MSU provides a comprehensive overview of advanced literary study as well as courses in creative and technical writing and linguistics.

The Linguistics Laboratory in the English department enables faculty and students to carry out original psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic, prosodic, and phonetic research.

Chaffin Award

The Thomas and Lillie D. Chaffin Award for Appalachian Writing provides students the opportunity to interact with a published writer who is writing from the region.

Reading Series

Each year the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program invites two nationally acclaimed writers to give readings and craft workshops as part of The Creative Writing Symposium.
