CPT Matteson J. Smith was born in Springfield, VA. He is the son of Mrs. Catherine C. and Commander Michael J. Smith (USCG Retired), growing up primarily in Grand Haven, Ml. In 2010, he commissioned as an Infantry Officer through Saint John's University's ROTC program. Smith's first assignment beginning his Army officer career was as an Executive Officer for HHC, 1-505 PIR, of 3 BCT, 82d ABN DIV, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Later assigned as the Battalion S-1 Officer in Charge, where he deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve to Baghdad, Iraq in 2015. On assignment in Germany, CPT Smith served as the G1 Planner within 10th MMDC prior to moving to 5-7 ADA and serving as the Battalion S-1 and then the Commander of Headquarters and Headquarters' Battery. Smith's awards and decorations include the Parachutist Badge, Army Commendation Medal (4), Army,Achievement Medal (2), Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medii, Meritorious Unit Citation, NATO Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Smith holds a bachelor's degree in Business Management from Saint John's University. His military education includes Infantry Officer Basic Course (Fort Benning, GA), Army Airborne School, and The Adjutant General Officer Advanced Course (Fort Jackson, SC).
