About the Academy

The Morehead State University Summer Arts Academy exists to nurture students’ development in the arts in a setting which allows interaction with expert faculty and the opportunity to work with other students who share specific interest in music, theater, art and design, and writing.
All students will select a course of study appropriate to their individual medium, but all will receive the same opportunities.

The Academy consists of six full days of activities, including individual and group instruction in your chosen area (music, theater, art and design, and writing). Recreational activities will include an art hop night, movie night, bowling night and performances/presentations by the Morehead State University Summer Arts Academy faculty.



Music students will enjoy spending up to five to six hours a day with faculty in their respective areas. Group instruction, private lessons and masterclasses will be given throughout the week. Students will learn specific techniques to take with them which will improve their individual musicianship.

Music students will have the opportunity to select two (2) electives during registration/check in on Sunday, June 12.

Description of Electives

  • Music Technology:  Students will enjoy getting hands on experience with music creation and notation software such as Garage Band, Finale, and Sibelius, and will explore how to use a soundboard to produce live audio
  • Choir: Students will have the opportunity to explore their vocal capabilities with others in this vocal ensemble.
  • Dalcroze Eurhythmics:  Is a process for awakening, developing and refining innate musicality through rhythmic movement of the body air training and improvisation
  • Jazz Improvisation:  This elective focuses on the foundations of jazz improvisation, exposing students to the wide world of jazz in a large group setting. All skill levels and instruments (including voice) are welcome.
  • Conducting: This elective will give the student and introduction into basic instrumental conducting. The student will have the opportunity to conduct in front of the ensemble during the week.


Theatre students will use a variety of art forms throughout the week; writing, craft making, photography, movement and dance, performance and language arts will all be used to help the student develop a strong sense of self awareness and navigate the terrain of their minds, hearts and surroundings. 
Students will study text from the following four Shakespeare plays -  “Hamlet,”  “Macbeth,” “A Midsummer Night's Dream,”  and “The Tempest.”  They will choose a character from one of the plays and merge the language of their chosen character into their narrative, and from there, they migrate their writings into a performance piece.  

There are a variety of activities that complement this part of the arts process including:
  • A paper mache mask making craft activity
  • Body movement and dance
  • Using and learning photography while they document their experiences

Using their narratives and photographs, the students will design a performance emphasizing both their singularity as young artists with differing experiences and backgrounds, and the power of community, teamwork and collective expression.


Students who enroll in Art and Design will have the unique opportunity to work in four areas during the week.
  • Ceramics – Professor Quinn Maher: In ceramics, students will use basic hand building methods to create both functional and sculptural pieces from clay. The works will then be fired and glazed/decorated.
  • Graphic Design – Mrs. Marina Miller: In graphic design, students will gather a basic understanding of digital art using Adobe photoshop and Illustrator to create unique personal works of art.
  • Printmaking & Art Activism – Ms. Juanita Dixon; In printmaking and art activism we will explore art for social change using techniques in printmaking.
  • Photography – Ms. Megan Pater: In photography students will explore the basics of photographing and create artworks using historical alternative photographic processes.


Taught by Dr. Deanna Mascle, students who enroll in writing will focus on journalism, specifically longform journalism, a branch of journalism focused on longer, more involved pieces, which often takes the form of creative nonfiction or narrative journalism. Students will research, write, and publish an overlooked and misunderstood story about their community by the end of the program. Students also spend time with working journalists as well as Morehead State Convergent Media faculty and students, write and record radio stories and learn about podcasting.
