Sydney Gebka

Sydney-Gebka.jpgWorking in marketing requires creativity, the ability to collaborate, and excellent writing and verbal communication skills. As a student in MSU’s Department of Management, Marketing and Sport Management, you’ll have the opportunity to develop and hone your business communication skills while gaining valuable, real-world experience.
Sydney Gebka (17) of Union, Kentucky, graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. Gebka participated in MSU’s Undergraduate Research Fellowship program and was able to conduct research alongside Dr. Jonathan Nelson, assistant professor of management.
“My research helped enhance my appreciation for my field of study and helped me to determine what kind of industry I would like to be a part of post-graduation,” she said.  “It has also led me to consider graduate school, which is something I had previously never considered. Working as an Undergraduate Research Fellow increased my appreciation of learning and how learning is a never-ending process.”
Gebka’s research was a study of workplace ethics and as part of her research she conducted surveys, co-authored two research articles, and presented her findings at Posters at the Capitol in Frankfort and MSU’s Celebration of Student Scholarship, where she was awarded a Certificate of Exceptional Merit.
Gebka said she plans to start her career working in marketing for a nonprofit organization. Her time collaborating with Dr. Nelson helped her gain valuable experience while working with a supportive mentor.
“Dr. Nelson truly cares about his students and wants to involve them as much as possible in the work he is doing. He is great at directing you in the right direction and providing constructive feedback when needed,” she said. “He knows how to recognize the strengths of individuals and help them to enhance their effectiveness.”
