Her research interests include literacy and sense of place, writing and identity, and contemporary feminist theories of composition.

Her most recent publications include, "Placed Writing: Displacement, Home, and Digital Literacy Communities," (The English Connection: 40 Years of Study at 'Lucian Blaga' University of Sibiu,' 2010), and "A Stripped Classroom: Exotic Dancers, Sexuality, University Teaching, and Community Engagement," (Reflections, A Journal of Writing, Service Learning, and Community Engagement, 2010).

Carrie Jo Coaplen earned her PhD in Rhetoric and Composition from the University of Louisville in 2009.
