PROSPECTIVE ART AND DESIGN STUDENTS

Morehead State University offers a wide range of options for visual arts study and participation. The undergraduate degree program in Art offers courses in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, graphic design, sculpture, ceramics, art history, computer art and art education. Students in art education earn a degree in Art with P–12 Teaching Certification. Minor programs are offered in Studio Art, Visual Art, Art History, and Arts Administration. Private advanced study is offered in 2D art, 3D art, digital art, art history, and art education. Internships, undergraduate fellowships, international study, and exhibition and publication opportunities are also offered.

For those students with a non-teaching undergraduate degree in art and design and who wish to pursue teacher certification in art, the Department of Art and Design also offers a Post-Baccalaureate Art Teaching (P-12) Initial Certification pathway.

A graduate degree program is offered with concentrations in studio art, graphic design and art education. For more detailed information about our art and design degree opportunities and requirements, please see Academic Programs.

Present your art professionally in departmentally organized exhibitions. Art and Design majors are required to prepare art for the annual Sophomore and Senior Exhibitions in our Claypool-Young Art Gallery. In addition, other opportunities include the annual Juried Art Student Mount Sterling Exhibit, Art History Class Exhibits, the Visual Art Guild Exhibit, the Fine Arts Showcase, Women Studies Celebration and the Juried Bluegrass Biennial Exhibit. Publish your work in the annual juried “Inscape“ Literary and Visual Arts magazine, a jointly sponsored Department of Art and the Department of English publication.

This program offers students many opportunities to gain practical experience:

• Apply for several prestigious on- and off-campus design internships, including a Communications & Marketing Internship, a Morehead Writing Project Internship, or a Kentucky Folk Art Center Internship.

• Build your portfolio and gain experience working with clients, while simultaneously earning university credit hours.

We urge you to arrange a personal visit to our campus on a school day. Your visit will allow us to get to know you better and will provide you with a first-hand look at our department and our world-class faculty. During your visit, you can observe classes, see student work and art exhibitions, and meet our excellent faculty and students.
