Morehead State hosts annual Burley Coal High School Art Show

Hundreds of artwork made by eastern Kentucky high school students are being featured in the 2024 Burley-Coal High School Art Exhibition at the Golding-Yang Gallery.  

The exhibit is open from Feb. 26 to March 6. 

Thirty-three high schools from 29 counties are invited to participate in the exhibition.  

“The Burley-Coal Regional High School Art Exhibition is a great opportunity for The Golding-Yang Art Gallery to showcase the amazing artwork created by young people across our region,” said Mike Bowen, Golding-Yang Gallery director. “The annual High School Art Day is the art department's opportunity to invite high school artists to visit our department and give them the chance to participate in activities in each of the studios at MSU.”  

On March 6, hundreds of students who participated in the exhibit will visit campus for High School Art Day. They will have the opportunity to see their works displayed in the gallery and will participate in several activities, including: 

  • Team masking tape sculpture competition, hosted by Professor of Art Lisa Mesa-Gaido.  
  • Demonstrations in the ceramics studio. 
  • Making a photogram in the photography lab. 
  • Running a screen or a letterpress print in the print shop. 
  • Demonstrations and potentially aiding with the making of small products in the maker space, hosted by Assistant Professor of Graphic Design Dr. Siriporn Peters.  

First, second, third place, and honorable mention awards for the following categories will be given out at the art exhibit:  

  • Painting  
  • Drawing  
  • Printmaking  
  • Digital art  
  • Ceramics  
  • Photography  
  • Sculpture  
  • Mixed media  
  • Textiles  
  • Jewelry  

There will also be awards for Best of Show in 2-D and Best of Show in 3-D design.  

The best 20 works will advance to The Kentucky Art Education Association High School All-State Art Exhibition. 

The Golding-Yang Art Gallery, located within the Claypool-Young Art Building, is a pivotal educational and cultural component of the Department of Communications, Media, Art and Design, the Caudill College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the MSU campus and the community at large. The gallery hosts opening receptions with live music and refreshments, readings and book signings, interdisciplinary events with inter-college and community partnerships, student performances, forums, and workshops. Participatory projects are vital to gallery programming, including live performances and interactive artworks, installations, and mural projects 

The gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the exhibit is open to the public.
