Option 9
Morehead State University wants to partner with school districts to provide aspiring educators a quicker way to become classroom-ready.
Expedited Elementary Education Certification
MSU’s Option 9 program is state-approved and offers an expedited route to certification by allowing students to earn a four-year degree and teaching certification for elementary education. Through district partnerships, we developed a flexible, individualized and affordable program to effectively help get qualified teachers to schools in our region.
Option 9 is a pathway for paraeducators in Kentucky to become certified teachers. Participants earn a bachelor’s degree and initial elementary education certification in three school years. Experienced teachers coach and mentor the candidates to help facilitate learning.
NOTE: To be admitted to an Option 9 program, you must submit a request for Option 9 admission two weeks prior to the beginning of the Fall or Spring semester.

Expedited Certification
MSU can help you earn your initial teacher certification or add a certification quickly! Through Option 9 for paraprofessionals, through the Proficiency pathway for those seeking initial certification or wanting to add a certification, or through the HQ (highly qualified) route for current teachers.
- Candidates must be employed in a classroom position while completing coursework.
- This route does not allow the candidate to serve as a teacher while enrolled.
- Initial certification is granted after the candidate completes their bachelor’s degree and certification assessments.
