Clinical Social Work Concentration

The clinical social work concentration prepares students for advanced practice in mental health, diagnosis and treatment, psychotherapy, and other clinical settings. The specialized curriculum is tailored to meet the specific needs of students pursuing careers as clinical social workers, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to work directly with individuals, families, and groups in therapeutic contexts.

Clinical social workers engage with individuals experiencing emotional, mental, or behavioral challenges. These may include conditions like anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use disorders, or severe mental illness. The specialized curriculum in clinical social work will ensure that students are prepared to handle the complexity and diversity of these clinical issues and will provide students with advanced training in assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment modalities like cognitive behavior therapy, and will be taught through a trauma-informed framework. By emphasizing practicum placements, supervised practice, and alignment with professional standards, the program ensures that students are well-prepared to enter the workforce as skilled and compassionate clinical social workers.

The Master of Social Work Clinical Social Work concentration will include two specialized clinical electives (SWK 631 and SWK 632), and the student will complete their 600-hour practicum placement in a clinical setting.

  • SWK 632: Introduction to Cognitive Behavior Therapy
  • SWK 616: Advanced Practicum I (student will be placed in a clinical setting)
