Admission Requirements

First-Time Freshmen

You’re considered a first-time freshman at Morehead State if you have graduated high school or earned a GED and have no previous college coursework apart from any:

• College coursework completed prior to your high school graduation
• College credits completed as an Eagle Scholar or through a dual-credit program

If you’ve graduated high school and completed coursework at another college or university, you’re considered transfer student (see below).

Test Scores

We generally don’t require the ACT, SAT, or other entrance exams for undergraduate admission. However, test scores are necessary for scholarship eligibility and may be needed for placement purposes or admission to specific academic programs.

Types of Admission for First-time Freshmen

After you apply to Morehead State, you’ll receive an admission decision that reflects your high-school GPA and other factors:

• Unconditional Admission (bachelor’s degree): High-school GPA of 2.50-4.00 (unweighted).
• Provisional Admission (bachelor’s degree): Student-athletes who’ve met NCAA qualifier requirements and have high-school GPAs of 2.00-2.49 (unweighted) or international students with high-school GPAs of 2.00-2.49 (unweighted). Must also have signed and approved MSU Learning Contract.
• Conditional Admission (associate’s degree): High-school GPA of 2.00-2.49 and signed/approved MSU Learning Contract. Must participate in Eagle Success Program. May move to a bachelor’s degree program after successfully completing 24 MSU credit hours.
• Denied Admission: High-school GPA below 2.00 (unweighted). Denied applicants may appeal with the Office of Advising and Retention at aare@moreheadstate.edu or 606-783-2084.

Pre-College Curriculum Requirements

If you’re a Kentucky resident, you must meet Pre-College Curriculum Requirements set by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education.

Your high school transcript helps us determine whether you’ve completed courses that satisfy these requirements. You also may be granted exemptions if you’ve attained sufficient test scores on the ACT or SAT.

Transfer Students

You’re considered a transfer student at Morehead State if you’ve completed coursework at any other college or university after graduating high school or completing a GED.

Admission to Morehead State reflects your transfer GPA and other aspects of your college record:

• Unconditional Admission: Transfer GPA or 2.00-4.00 for at least 24 credit hours or college work and good standing at all colleges/universities previously attended.
• Denied Admission: Transfer GPA below 2.00 on a 4.00 scale. Will be required to participate in admission appeal request.
• Probationary Admission after Appeal: Transfer GPA below 2.00 (on a 4.00 scale). Will be monitored and expected to earn a 2.00 GPA higher during your first MSU semester.

If you transfer with fewer than 24 credit hours, you’re subject to the same admission criteria as first-time freshmen (see above).

RETURNING STUDENTS

You are considered a returning student if you last attended Morehead State University.

• Unconditional Admission: MSU GPA of 2.00 - 4.00. At least 24 credit hours of college work. In good standing.
• Denied Admission: MSU GPA below 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Students may appeal with Enrollment Services.
• Probationary Admission: Student was admitted through appeal. Will be monitored and expected to earn a 2.0 GPA at MSU during the first semester of attendance.

RETURNING TRANSFER STUDENTS

You are considered a returning transfer student if you have attended MSU in the past but have most recently attended another college/university.

• Unconditional Admission: MSU GPA and transfer GPA of 2.00 - 4.00. At least 24 credit hours of college work. In good standing.
• Denied Admission: MSU or transfer GPA below 2.0. Students may appeal with Enrollment Services.
• Probationary Admission: Student was admitted through appeal. Will be monitored and expected to earn a 2.0 GPA at MSU during the first semester of attendance.

International Students

You’re considered an international student if you’re applying to Morehead State as a citizen of another country. International students must meet academic requirements, demonstrate English language proficiency, and document financial resources.

Required academic credentials include:

• Original, official high-school transcript showing proof of graduation
• High-school GPA of at least 2.00 (see types of admission above)
• WES evaluation if you have completed any previous college-level coursework

If from a non-English-speaking country, demonstrate English proficiency by showing any of the following:

• IELTS 5.0, TOEFL 61, Michigan Test 82, Duolingo Official (105), Pearson Test of English Academics (50)
• Successful graduation from a U.S. high school (must also submit ACT or SAT scores)
• Sufficient ACT or SAT scores
• At least 24 credit hours completed at a U.S. college or university

Original, official financial documents should include:

• Bank statement (on official bank letterhead, in English, and less than three months old) showing a balance of at least $34,000 U.S. dollars (scholarships or other financial awards reduce this amount)
• Letter of Support if sponsored by a parent or other party (we’ll email you a Letter of Support template)
• Scholarship letters

In addition, you should provide:

• Copy/image of the picture page from your passport and/or visa and/or I-20
• Optional ACT or SAT scores (for scholarship and placement purposes)
• Transfer Form if you’ve previously studied at another U.S. college or university

Scholarship Eligibility

Morehead State uses unweighted high-school GPAs and ACT/SAT test scores to determine scholarship eligibility. ACT/SAT scores generally are not required for admission but may be required for scholarships or other purposes.
