Profile
“As an alumnus of Morehead State, I know full well the value of the education I received at MSU. Students can expect a world-class music education provided by exceptional faculty, all in a ‘small school’ atmosphere where students receive the individual attention they need to thrive. I owe everything I’ve achieved to the start I was given at Morehead State.”
Dr. DuWayne Dale joined the faculty of Morehead State in 2017 after 18 years of teaching high school band and orchestra in public schools in Ohio and Kentucky. During that time, he also served as adjunct music education and private applied faculty at Kentucky Wesleyan College and as a regional arts specialist for the Kentucky Department of Education. Programs under his leadership have had a consistent reputation for performance excellence in both the concert setting and the marching arts. Dr. Dale remains an active instrumentalist, having performed frequently with the Dayton Jazz Orchestra, the Kim Kelly Big Band, the Owensboro Symphony Second Street Big Band, the Bend in the River Brass Band (River Brass), the Cave Run Symphony Orchestra and numerous other ensembles throughout his teaching career. Dr. Dale proudly holds a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music degree from Morehead State University. He completed his Rank I in music education and conducting at the University of Kentucky and his Master of Business Administration through Western Governors University. His Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Music Education was completed at Boston University.
Dr. Dale is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME/KMEA), the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), the National Band Association (NBA), and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) and has been honored by membership in the prestigious Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity as well as with honorary memberships in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity. He is the State President-Elect of the Kentucky Music Educators Association and the KY State Chair for the College Band Directors National Association. He was named the KMEA second district High School Music Educator of the Year in 2012 and the KMEA eighth district College/University Music Educator of the Year in 2018 and 2020. He has twice been honored with a citation of excellence from the National Band Association and is in demand as a guest conductor and clinician. He works actively with high school and middle school bands, conducting regional honor bands and adjudicating music festivals and competitions.
