L. Scott Miller

Biography

Over the course of his lifetime, L. Scott Miller prepared himself for a well-rounded career in traditional music which has included performance, production, writing, teaching and entrepreneurship. He draws on this broad experience in teaching and mentoring students.

He has performed in some of the most popular venues in country music including The Grand Ole Opry, Opryland USA, and Silver Dollar City. His performances have been broadcast on television networks, TNN, CBS and CMT and on WSM.

Scott Miller has toured with, recorded with and been mentored by individuals such as fiddle virtuoso, Dan Kelly, Nashville studio owner and producer, Jim Wood, master of Eastern Kentucky fiddle, Roger Cooper and noted West Virginia banjo player, Dwight Diller. Personal friendships and professional relationships with these artists and others including Grand Ole Opry stars Porter Wagoner, Jeannie Pruitt, and John Conlee give him unique and invaluable perspective when teaching about Traditional Music.

His authored articles and transcriptions have been published in respected publications including Fiddler Magazine and the Small Farmer’s Journal.

He has significant experience working in studios and on the road, environments that require fluent ability to quickly read and write music so as to communicate in the way that traditional musicians convey musical information when recording and onstage - through the use of numbers, charts, scores, and by ear. He earned his music degree from Morehead State and did well in the excellent music theory courses taught with focus on ways of communicating that are commonly used in classical music including terminology that is primarily written in Italian. After graduation, in order to be effective working in commercial environments and with country musicians, he had to transition and acquire a working knowledge of chord and melody charts that primarily utilize numbers and different vocabulary. Working as band leader and band member gave him the opportunity to communicate music in this style on a daily basis. Heretofore seldom mentioned in schools of higher education music department theory classes with a more classical orientation, Scott has the ability to teach students the jargon used, and the process music theory is commonly communicated in commercial settings and by country musicians.
